Billionaire-Backed AI Network's Washington Takeover
POLITICO
A billionaire-funded AI network, backed by Silicon Valley figures, is directing policymakers in Washington to prioritize potential AI risks.
This AI focus, funded by Open Philanthropy and linked to major AI companies, influences key congressional offices and think tanks.
Critics worry it may divert attention from pressing AI issues and favor leading AI companies.
The network's emphasis on speculative risks is concerning, potentially sidelining immediate AI system challenges like bias, misinformation, and privacy.
There are calls for a more diverse approach that addresses current AI harms.

Google has entered the AI-generated image creation arena with its Search Generative Experience (SGE).
Users can input text prompts, and the AI will generate four unique images based on the text.
This feature is a response to Bing's image creator, providing Chromebook users with an alternative.
The AI-generated images will be watermarked and labeled to distinguish them from human-created originals.
Additionally, a forthcoming feature called "About this image" will offer contextual information and enhance credibility checks for these AI-generated images.

Adobe's Game-Changing AI Tool for Video Editing
Adobe
Adobe has teased "Project Fast Fill" for video editing at its annual creative conference, Adobe MAX.
This innovative tool leverages generative AI to allow users to edit videos with simple text prompts.
Tasks like removing or adding objects or changing background elements, which usually require intense editing, can now be done quickly and easily.
The tool automatically applies the edits to all frames of the video, adjusting for various factors like lighting changes and object movement.
While the release date is not yet announced, Project Fast Fill demonstrates Adobe's commitment to integrating generative AI into its video editing applications.

AI: The New Third-Party Seller Trend
Bloomberg
Amazon, Shopify, and eBay are integrating generative AI tools to assist third-party sellers in writing product listings.
These AI tools can analyze images and generate persuasive marketing copy to enhance product descriptions.
Sellers can quickly create high-quality product titles, bullet points, and descriptions, optimizing them for search algorithms and saving time.
Amazon, for instance, has launched a generative AI tool to generate comprehensive product descriptions based on sellers' input, improving the shopping experience for customers.
Other platforms like eBay and Shopify are also utilizing AI for generating item descriptions and supporting various business-related tasks beyond product listings, such as drafting emails, creating blog posts, and analyzing data.
While there are risks associated with blindly relying on AI, using platform-specific AI tools tailored to each platform can enhance sales results and efficiency for sellers.

Why the Internet Isn't Fun Anymore
The New Yorker
The internet, especially social media, is no longer as enjoyable as it used to be.
Algorithm-driven content, hierarchical platforms, and a shift towards video-based interactions have all contributed to this decline.
There's a lack of casual interaction and a higher pressure to conform to a certain online persona, making posting less common.
The pandemic and remote work have altered online behavior, and social platform growth rates have slowed.
This shift has disrupted media business models and diminished the quality of original online content.
The author reminisces about a time when the internet was simpler and more enjoyable, referencing a website called Orisinal that offered uncomplicated games without the complexities of modern social media.

Resurrecting Deceased Actor's Voice for Phantom Liberty
CD Projekt Red
In the Cyberpunk 2077 DLC, Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt Red used AI to emulate the late actor Miłogost Reczek's performance as doctor Viktor Vektor, who passed away in 2021.
The company obtained permission from Reczek's family to use AI to preserve his voice for the DLC, with another actor providing the new voice lines while emulating Reczek's style.
This raises concerns about the use of AI to mimic actors and the ethical implications surrounding digital likenesses in creative works.
Respeecher, a Kyiv-based startup, provided the voice cloning technology for this project and has been involved in notable Star Wars projects using similar technology.
