A.I. Tool Diagnoses Brain Tumors During Surgery

Scientists in the Netherlands have developed a method that uses artificial intelligence to analyze segments of a brain tumor's DNA for chemical modifications, providing a detailed diagnosis of the tumor type and subtype during surgery.

This real-time AI-generated diagnosis helps surgeons decide the extent of the operation, potentially sparing healthy brain tissue while ensuring complete tumor removal.

The method, named Sturgeon, was tested on frozen tumor samples, accurately diagnosing 45 out of 50 cases within 40 minutes.

In live brain surgeries, it delivered 18 correct diagnoses within 90 minutes, aiding surgical decisions.

INNOVATION

Firefox Trials Built-In Fake Review Checker

Mozilla, the company behind Firefox browser, is testing a new feature called "Review Checker" to combat fake product reviews.

This feature rates the reliability of customer reviews and provides an "adjusted rating" out of five stars by removing unreliable reviews.

It aims to tackle the problem of fraudulent reviews on online retail platforms.

The technology for this feature is powered by Fakespot, a company acquired by Mozilla earlier in the year.

Fakespot uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to detect deceptive reviews by analyzing patterns and similarities between reviews.
